Training is only as effective as we want it to be.

I was stunned.  At a recent Dale Carnegie Course graduation, a participant began his speech: “I was not sure why my manager signed me up for this and was reluctant about attending.”  The same graduate closed his speech exclaiming, “This experience changed my personal and professional life!”

Change will always be a challenge that requires intent and perseverance toward a vision.  Think about:
  • Michael Phelps, the greatest Olympic champion ever, had to do things much differently at this year’s Olympics than he did 16 years ago in his first Olympic games.
  • Tiger Woods had the greatest 10 year period golf has ever seen, and he was constantly striving to improve every area of his game. He even changed coaches in the middle of that 10 year run.  Why?  To get better and stay ahead of the competition.
  • Does anyone think the Golden State Warriors, after having the greatest season ever, only to lose in the Championship Series, are not looking to change? In the off season, they signed Kevin Durant, one of the top 5 basketball players in the world!

Change is often uncomfortable. Let’s not become – in the words of Pink Floyd – “comfortably numb” in our success. Instead, let’s embrace the opportunities we have to change and improve.
