Skydiving is NOWHERE to be found on my bucket list, so when I was invited to attend a company function at IFly in Frisco last week, I seriously considered ways to excuse myself. But if my team members were in, then I figured I had to be in too.
I am a “learn by doing” person, and the fact IFly provided pre-fly instruction and a certified trainer (Kyle) eased my concerns. Kyle knew all of us were anxious about doing something new, and assured us that he would be there to make sure we wouldn’t fly out of control in the wind tunnel. He did what our trainers are charged to do at Dale Carnegie: create an environment in which people feel comfortable taking risks.
We grow by taking risk, and sometimes that involves a “leap” outside our comfort zones. My experience at IFly reminded me that if we want to accelerate our growth, we need to:
- Surround ourselves with people that push us to grow.
- Seek professional coaching so we practice the right way (practice makes permanent).
- Take the leap!
Dale Carnegie said,
“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy”
Most of our fears in life have very little to do with reality. I had a blast at my first skydiving experience. The satisfaction we can gain by pushing through self-imposed boundaries is so rewarding. I can’t wait to “IFly” again!
