One of the highest compliments a sales person can receive is they are considered a trusted advisor by their clients.  When we say trusted advisor, we naturally think of sales. But it goes beyond sales: leaders, great managers, and many colleagues can be considered trusted advisors as well.

What is a “trusted advisor”?  Someone who has the ability to listen, provide valuable feedback, ask pertinent questions, and act as a partner in navigating through situational challenges.  You might be thinking, “That’s a mentor!” You would be correct.  Mentors – like trusted advisorsinvest themselves in others.

In my career I have been fortunate to know three such people (four, if you include my wife).  All share some common qualities:

  • Great communication skills
  • Big picture perspective
  • Genuine interest in me
  • Confidentiality
  • Business acumen
  • Excellent listening skills

There was no pretending.  Their behavior wasn’t selfish in its intent.  It was just who they were.

My recommendation is treasure your trusted advisors like gold, and become one to people you care about.  Do this and you will leave a legacy that you and your family can be proud of.
